BREEAM is the world’s leading design and assessment method for sustainable buildings, with 250,000 buildings and over a million registered for assessment since the rating was first launched in 1990.

BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognized measures of a building’s environmental performance. It encourages designers, clients and others to think about low carbon and low impact design, minimizing the energy demands created by a building before considering energy efficiency and low carbon technologies.

A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

Close the Loop is able to offer clients in the construction industry the following support:

  • Certification of construction materials, according to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to assure compliance with building rating labels, such as BREEAM and LEED. For more information, click here.

LCA software training

Prof. T. Yiannakopoulou and Dr. P. Panagiotakopoulos successfully completed a training on GaBi, the world’s leading Life Cycle Assessment software.

The 2 day training took place on the 9th and 10th of June in Stuttgart, the base of PE International developer of GaBi.

GaBi is used in the modeling of products and systems from a life cycle perspective. It can dramatically help the conduct of an LCA study by calculating the balance of emissions and material and energy inputs and outputs. In order to do so, GaBi is supported by extensive LCI databases such as the European Life Cycle Database (ELCD) and ecoinvent that cover a large number of processes and systems.
