EDSS is the outcome of a 3-year (2012-2015), €140K European Union funded research project.
Over the last decade, several businesses have started to adopt CSR policies, while searching out for appropriate documentation of their practices. However, in most cases, this is done either superficially or wrongly. Recent research shows that most of these companies are focusing mainly on “green marketing” practices, failing to exhibit tangible and measurable improvement results, sound management practices and life-cycle responsibility of products and services.
Ecolabels (or “green labels”) is a market-based and consumer-oriented approach to dealing with various environmental and social issues. Consumer demand for Ecolabels is growing rapidly; the market’s response is a proliferation of ecolabel schemes worldwide (www.ecolabelindex.com). However, consumer confusion about the essence of sustainability and its certifying procedures, for products and for companies, persists. Yet, consumers are increasingly capable – through the internet and social media, among others – of scrutinizing whatever claims companies make and of exposing the “greenwashers”.
EDSS is a tool that intends to help companies/organizations choose the most appropriate ecolabel, among the hundreds available internationally, either for specific products or for the business as a whole entity.
